Martie vs Thrive Market vs Imperfect Foods: Reviews & Favorite Items
What’s the difference between Martie vs Thrive Market vs Imperfect Foods? 64% of Americans have shopped for groceries online with Millennials being the largest adopters of online grocery shopping. The reason for all of this. Online is the way of the future.
I’m writing this article exactly 2 years to the month since the pandemic started. In this timeframe, I’ve been in a physical grocery store 4 times. That’s including my two trips to Costco where I stocked up on household items and picked up some groceries while I was there. That math equates to every 6 months, and I have a very full pantry and fridge. This is because I'm one of those millennials. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, where companies like Imperfect Foods and Grove Collaborative started. I’m a total statistic, and I’m ok with it.

Imperfect Foods
My online grocery shopping journey started with Imperfect Foods (which was called Imperfect Produce) back in 2016. Back then, Imperfect Foods only delivered in San Francisco, CA and Berkeley, CA. You had to pay a delivery fee and there was no minimum amount to not pay it. But, there were pick-up locations where you could pick up your produce box on Saturdays. The Imperfect Foods boxes literally only had produce, and they slowly expanded to offer eggs, then dairy and bread.

Where is Imperfect Foods now?
Almost all over the United States… and you can order meat, meat alternatives, dairy and dairy alternatives, eggs, pantry basics, baked goods, beauty products, and seasonal amazing produce… all delivered to your home, once a week on a subscription model through Imperfect Foods.
What are my thoughts on Imperfect Foods?
I almost gave up on them in 2019, then 2020 came, and I didn’t want to give up on having groceries delivered for obvious reasons. In 2019, we were receiving so many broken eggs, gashed produce, even some rotten. I would even have things like bags of flour broken in the box, or my delivery just not making it. That was really difficult because we counted on it showing up and planned for it. In 2020, it only got worse, for obvious reasons. I’m glad to report that Imperfect Foods has finally worked out their kinks and it’s an amazing service!
Imperfect Foods now packages their eggs in a unique way to prevent breakage. I rarely get gashed items. The customer service is now good (it wasn’t for a long time) and they’ve made it much easier to file for a missing or damaged item refund. This still happens occasionally, but with the volume, I don’t expect perfection. I just want shopping to be delivered close to the selection I would have if I were doing it myself in-store, and for a similar price. And of course, the mission of making use of overstocked or less desired items that would otherwise go to waste is something to get behind.

How often do I order Imperfect Foods?
It’s set up on a subscription model, where you select a produce box size and if you don’t edit it, that size will be delivered weekly. You can skip for up to 6 weeks out. I actually mark all weeks as skipping, then go in and unskip the weekend before the Wednesday delivery and order a Imperfect Foods box when I can foresee that I need groceries. We also pick up milk and basics from the corner store a few blocks away, and I like to get some produce orders from Costco because the deals are great. My Imperfect Foods deliveries usually end up being every 3 weeks or so. There’s a lot of flexibility, as long as you remember to log-in at least every 6 weeks. You will receive email reminders to customize your orders or to activate an order weekly, so it’s hard to miss.

Thrive Market
I’ve been ordering groceries with Thrive Market since 2018. I’ve placed around 25 orders in that time. Thrive Market is a fantastic service for pantry items and frozen foods, however, Thrive doesn’t deliver fresh produce, dairy, eggs etc, so you’ll still need to get groceries delivered via another means or hit-up the grocery store.

What are my thoughts on Thrive Market?
Thrive always seems to get me with their daily freebies. I have the Thrive Market app on my phone (which we all know is precious real estate) and every few days, I’ll receive a notification that Thrive Market is running a free item with purchase. Often, they’re smaller items like sauces, dressings, spices, jerky, dried fruit etc. But sometimes… those freebies can be remarkable!
I’ve received a tincture of CBD oil that’s valued at $50 for free, a can of Four Sigmatic Protein Powder, again worst $50, and Fair Trade Coffee and Chocolate. The good ones are a race to place an order though. I’ve texted my Mom, and she’s missed out on a couple by trying to place an order a couple hours later.
I love that Thrive Market is like shopping at Whole Foods online, but for a fraction of the cost. I feel good about the items I’m purchasing, and they arrive very fast. I place my order in the evenings often, and the box will be at my door around noon the day after next. Less than 48 hours, the box is curated, packed, shipped, and at my door… with eco-packaging and packed well. I’ve only ever had one broken item.
My only complaint is that Thrive Market’s customer support is only ok. They seem templated and scripted, and it’s difficult to communicate. Once everything is communicated, they seem generous to get everything settled. It’s just time and stress consuming.
The Thrive Market website is so easy to navigate and fun to shop around and explore items, and I’m also a fan of the fact that they have dog items. I get dental chews and treats for my pup, as well as his dental water additive. Thrive vs Imperfect Imperfect Foods vs Martie
How often do I order from Thrive Market?
I order from Thrive more than other services. I think it’s because my Husband has been doing Keto for a while and they have such a good selection of Keto items as well as health-food goods. The price and convenience is just right. We sometimes go a few weeks without a Thrive market order, and other weeks, I’ve placed two orders in a week. I’m a huge fan! I’ve also converted my Mom, who’s a regular Thrive Market shopper now as well.

Martie vs Imperfect Foods
Martie
Martie is my brand new discovery. It’s one of the many items that I found scrolling through Instagram that I decided to try. First, it’s March 2022 when I’m writing this article, and it appears that Martie only delivers to the West Coast. I believe this will change, just as Imperfect Foods grew over time as they started in the San Francisco Bay Area and expanded.
What is Martie Food Delivery Service? What are my thoughts on Martie?
Martie does have some similarities to Thrive Market in the type of products they sell. The grocery items are pantry items, and it’s very similar to Whole Foods but online. The biggest difference between Thrive Market and Martie is that Martie focuses on overstock items and daily/weekly deals. Martie reminds me very much of an online version of places like Grocery Outlet.
Imperfect Foods vs Martie. Martie Review. Martie Review.
In the San Francisco Bay Area, Grocery Outlet is a place where you can do grocery shopping in-store with overstocked and highly discounted items. You may not be able to complete all your shopping here due to the business model, but you can find some fantastic deals. Martie is very similar to this model, but with an online model. They even have daily deals for 1¢ items that are usually pretty great. Because this is a new service, I’m including my first two receipts here. I will note a few things with Martie.
There’s free shipping after $50 and it can be a little difficult to get to $50. I wish Martie lowered this amount to a number like $35.
The deals change often. So often, that I placed two orders four days apart and the options for what was available were completely different.
I’m about a good deal, but I’m also not afraid to spend money on quality items so I’m not the gal that will do an unboxing with a ton of low budget items to show how many items I can buy. I’ll always be a quality vs quantity person so please note that when looking at the value of what I’ve selected.
I enjoyed the experience enough to come back a few days later, and that says a lot because it takes a lot to gain my loyalty as a shopper. I think Martie may be onto something!
The User Experience on the Martie website was fun and easy to use.
I don’t foresee Martie being a regular go-to but I will absolutely check for goodies and throw them in the rotation.
Examples of my first two Martie orders:
Both Martie orders were just over $50, so I could qualify for free shipping. The items I believe were the best deals were the Right Rice Brown Butter Sage, The Medjool Dates (which were a decent sized box and not crystalized), Organic Coconut Sugar, and the Gluten Free Flour. I did get a bag of Chili Lime Popcorn for 1¢ so I can’t beat that either.
