Emily Strauss, Founder of Mural Painter, on The Shark Tank, Season 11, on ABC

In this podcast episode, I interviewed Emily Strauss, the Founder of MuralPainter and participant on The Shark Tank. Mural Painter takes on contracts for hand painted mural signs in major cities like New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. Emily pitched her business to the Sharks and received two offers. One from Kevin O’Leary and one from Barbara Corcoran. In my podcast episode, Emily talks about her experience receiving the offers and how her mind was made up before she even entered the room!

“She was my target before I even knew who was on my panel. It has to be Barbara. So, when she made me an offer, everything else just went blank and I was like… yes, yes, yes! No matter what, yes!” - Emily Strauss

The reason I reached out to Emily was because her energy and story resonated with me from the show. I’m also drawn to creatives and artists since I’ve worked with so many of them from my experience in HR at Google, Activision and frog Design.

Emily’s story from having some health issues growing up to managing and growing a business is quite inspirational. Emily has a GED, just like me, and she’s risen to such great success. I love a good GED success story. You can find my GED success story here. My first whole podcast episode is on my story from GED to Microsoft and Google.

I asked Emily if Mural Painter would be expanding to the San Francisco Bay Area, and she said they just took their first project in San Jose, California and that she can see that expansion in the future. We have such a great street-art scene and I can imagine there being a need for business’ to fit into that culture in The Bay Area.

One of the most heart-warming pieces of our talk was how Covid-19 has affected so many businesses, including Mural Painter. It was unfortunate that the airing of her Shark Tank episode happened at the peak of the pandemic. I agree with Emily’s positive outlook and position that people will want to be inspired after the pandemic, and I believe Mural Painter will grow well when things stabilize.

Emily’s not just a GED success story. She's not just a participant on The Shark Tank. She’s not just a lyme disease survivor. She’s not just a business owner… Well, ok, she is all of those things… All that together is a lot too! Emily is an example of what we all can do if we decide to lead with positivity and make choices not to let life lead us. That’s the biggest lesson that I got from interviewing Emily Strauss in this podcast episode. Stay positive, keep that chin up, and keep going.
