Dawn Galante

Owner of Dawn’s Dream Winery

Keeping in theme of amazing female entrepreneurs, business owners and leaders, when I thought about who I would want to invite onto the podcast series, I immediately thought of Dawn Galante from Dawn’s Dream Winery! Dawn’s Dream is hands down my favorite pinot noir in the world, and the wines are priced very accessibly too.

Prior to my reaching out, I had never connected with Dawn Galante, but I’ve always had such an amazing experience with her team of mostly female employees. The Dawn’s Dream brand is also very female forward. Dawn named her three pinot noir wines after her three daughters Alyssa, Nicole, and Rachel and her first granddaughter Eliza Jane is on the Sangiovese label.

As I get older, I’m getting more and more sensitive to wines and hangovers and headaches… I also struggle with chronic acid reflux that comes genetically from my Mom’s side. I swear that Dawn’s Dream triggers my sensitivities less than most other wines as well. So, not only do I enjoy the experience drinking the wine immensely, but I don’t have regrets afterwards too!

When I first reached out to Dawn to ask if she would be interested in being on the podcast, she responded positively, and we started to work out times that we could connect more. We set a date for later that week, and that so happened to be the week the wildfires started down in the Carmel and Monterey areas… This is where the winery and tasting rooms are. Naturally, the podcast became a low priority while Dawn and her team were concerned with personal safety and the preservation of the vineyard and grapes.

During this episode, Dawn and I talk about her experience losing this year’s pinot noir harvest and the struggles of being a business owner during both Covid-19 and the wildfires. The endless adapting in 2020 has been hard on small businesses and we talk about this a little.

Dawn and I also discuss the evolution of the wine industry in Carmel, California and how her husband is the owner of the first wine tasting room in Carmel, where there’s nearly 20 tasting rooms now. We delve into how important education is, but how some successful women have formed resumes with less formal education than others.

A couple other things became quite clear to me throughout the process of arranging the interview. First, Dawn Galante really values her customers and their loyalty. Second, her team really respects her and she very much respects her team. There’s such a level of respect for the contribution each team member is bringing to the wine making process and the operations of the business. Throughout the interview, I could tell Dawn was just a kind person. She’s just like her wines… approachable. I’m even more excited now than ever to call Dawn’s Dream my favorite winery.
